Presidents Report 2010
I had hoped to be able to say that the club had made real progress at Division One level this year, however the results were disappointing. After a promising preseason build up, the team failed to consistently show the form they were capable of. This must have been disappointing for Brendon and Craig who were in their final season as Div 1 Coaches. My thanks go to them for their efforts over the last three seasons. All the other open grade teams had good seasons and several made either finals or semi finals in their grades.
The Junior section was once again very strong. My thanks goes to Debbie Curtain and her enthusiastic and energetic committee for their work this year. We have some very talented youngsters and coaches that we will hear a lot more of in the future.
Our congratulations also to all the Shirley Club players that achieved representative honours this year.
The Board has a number of initiatives in place to address the recruitment of next seasons senior coaches and players and the growth of the Shirley Club. A combination of these, along with some new faces and a number of our players maturing and moving on to higher grades bodes well for next year.
We have held several meetings with Shirley Boys High School to look at the synergies between our organisations and to strengthen the relationship between the School and the Shirley Clubs (both rugby and cricket).
As with last year, the morale in the club is high, with very good numbers at both after match and social functions.
No Club can operate successfully without the many volunteers that give of their time freely. I would like to extend my thanks to the Board, all the coaches, helpers and players that contributed this year. A special mention to Howard Morel for his continuing efforts over the season as Club Chairman and a big pat on the back to Damian Curtain and his fundraising team who organised the very successful pre-test Luncheon.
Once again a big thank you to all our Sponsors this season, your contributions are invaluable. Especially Ken Jones (PlaceMakers Cranford Street) our cornerstone sponsor; Pam Mitchell (Harcourts) and Daryl and Paul McLachlan (I Pave) for their very generous sponsorships.
Wishing everyone good cheer for the festive season and looking forward to a great season of rugby in 2011, “World Cup” year.

Shirley Sports Club Report 2010
Once again the priorities of the Sports Club Board this year have been the monitoring of the Club’s finances and the reduction of debt.
The outstanding balances of the loans as at 31st October 2010 are as follows: Westpac loan: $15,034.54 and Christchurch City Council loan: $50,000.
Obtaining funding is becoming harder in the current environment and this year has been particularly difficult. Our thanks goes to Howard Morel for the time and energy he commits to this.
Once the Westpac loan is paid off next year we will be able to direct more funding into other areas e.g. the possibility of employing a manager for both the Sports Club and shareholder Clubs, to help with the administration and running of our organisations. We are also investigating some other initiatives to advance the clubs, which we will report on at a later date.
Maintenance is also an important issue that needs addressing. Normal wear and tear is showing especially in the changing sheds and on lounge area walls. We were very fortunate that the clubrooms only suffered minor damage as a result of the recent earthquake.
Thanks also to my fellow Board members: Peter Dow, John Grocott and Steve Barry from the Cricket Club and Stewart Mitchell and Steve Clark from the Rugby Club and Shona Milne our Secretary.

OPEN GRADE - 2010
Division One Report 2010
Much was anticipated from this year’s group and the pre season certainly gave us the impression that there were better things to come. We won 4 games in the 1st round and had narrow losses to Marist Albion and Burnside which should have been won, finishing the 1st round in 8th place. Unfortunately we lost all 5 games in round 2 however apart from the Old Boys game the worst differential was 7 points. In round 3 we unfortunately only won 1 game which was extremely disappointing from a team that promised so much.
On the positive side the team scored 43 tries which is considerably more than the previous 3 years and the points differential was also the best since 2006.
The continued development of colts David Tomkinson and Josh Edmonds and the introduction of two others in Josh Reeves and Chris Morel must surely bode well for the future.
Our thanks to Darren Askew, Jared Johnston, Blair Henwood, Paul McLachlan the physiotherapists and the rubbers for all their assistance throughout the year.

Shirley Colts - 2010
The 2010 Shirley Colts: Coaches Vic Holloway and Peter Webb
Manager Tubby
The colts started the 2010 season well, beating some of the more favoured sides as our numbers were down on previous seasons which made our task that much harder. It was good to see Josh Reeves make the transition from Colts to Seniors and by all accounts I believe he acquitted himself well on & off the field. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank a few people firstly Vic - cheers mate you have put a lot of time into these young men over the last 3 years and I personally know they do appreciate it. Secondly thanks to Peter Webb who made the time to assist Vic in coaching our backs. I must say Pete also thank you for your generosity through-out the season - you supported the boys on several occasions shouting beer & supporting the team in the lip-sync competition. It was a pity that we couldn’t maintain our perfect record however that’s life. Also a big thanks to Tyles and Cindy these guys did a brilliant job every Saturday come rain or shine— also I know the guys appreciate you both.
This is the end of an error somewhat as we only have 6-7 boys allegible for 2011 Colts - the others hopefully will remain with the club and go on to play senior footy. From a personal point I would like to thank each and every player who represented the Shirley Colts through-out the 2010 season. I certainly have had some good times and even been to a few 21sts. On that note thanks for the support we have received from the club throughout the season it doesn't go un-noticed.

Division 4 Report—2010
Shirley Rugby Div 4
Coach: Alan Dent
Manager: Trudy Smallridge
It’s been another tough season. Losing 3 key players for the season in the first game had a huge impact. While being competitive at times, lack of numbers meant fielding a different team each week.
While wins were few and far between we did make the plate final. Still struggling to put a team on the field, we were competitive for the first 20 minutes and leading faded to lose 29-7.
Thanks to the core 10 players who turned up every week and those who turned up from other teams and helped out. Thanks to the supporters as well.
We will definitely be recruiting for committed players next season. And as the Tui slogan goes “Looking forward to another season like this one – Yeah Right!”
DIV 6/SHIRLEY WANKERS-2010
Moving up to a 10 team competition in Division 5 gave the 2010 Shirley W’s a challenge they were eager to take on. With the hard core from the 2009 campaign back ready for action, and a bunch of talented recruits fronting up to add to the line up, the intensity of the early season trainings had them ready and “hitting the ground running”.
On a weekly basis, fearless team leader Clint, the tight five motivator, ensured on-field performances were the best possible on the day. In the double round-robin competition, the W’s beat every team at least once except for the W’s nemesis, the Belfast Munchers. Three games against them saw the results never more than a few points apart, with one an 8 -all draw. The team target of reaching the top four for the play-offs was achieved, with a semi final against Belfast going down to the wire, with them being the eventual competition winners. Next year they know it’s over for them!
Great moments on the field included sound victories over some of the favoured sides such as the Sydenham Saracens, Linwood Bollocks and HSOB Keiths. Our Challenge Shield match to take the shield off Sydenham saw the W’s lose 5 points to 8 in controversial circumstances as the aftermath confirmed.
For commitment and dedication, I would give these guys an “A” pass, as every training run had a good turnout resulting in strong on field performances to match their efforts.
From a great team performance all season, a few players to mention are, Clint the leader, lead by example and was a great mediator between player and referee.
All the backs played with distinction, with Tyson Le Vavasour – Brown (former sparring partner to Mike Tyson) at halfback, taking out the club award for Most Tries Scored with 12. Close behind was Jake Brietmeyer with 10 tries from a team total of 62. Mitch McLachlan held equal first for Most Points Scored for the season with 100, but was beaten to the club award in the last round by senior player Dave Tomkinson.
Roy Roycroft was superb at full back, and our star wingers Mini Manu Allen and Sonny Bi Knowles again completed a whole season without scoring a try. Sonny Bi did take out the teams Inter Island Ferry Public Relations title and also most sin bins for the season.
The forwards were masterful at the confrontation with Cappy Mitchell, Bieber Neuman and Munta Wells leading the way with Kenny the Muss finishing off the punishment.
The W’s Player of the Year Title for 2010 was picked from some great contenders and the chosen one was Westy Hitchcock from the tight five, for his training commitment, consistent on-field performance and general nice guy demeanour – a potential mayoral candidate.
The social portfolio of this team is commendable, with a culture of fellowship and sharing, ably lead by the master of entertainment, Mr Booga (and Greer?). The team victory song, the historic haka and the numerous social events throughout the season made this group into more than a team of rugby players.
Once again, the assistance from those two great rugby institutions, I Pave and Warrens Wood Turners are much appreciated. To our band of over enthusiastic supporters – thanks for coming and the same again next year.
From Waka and myself – thanks to the whole team for the entertainment provided.
The legacy continues into 2011.

JUNIOR REPORT 2010
The 2010 season was very successful for our Junior section. We had 13 teams from Under 6 through to Under 13 which had increased this year by 3 new teams. This year our Under 12 and Under 13 teams had a good year, with both being in the semi finals for their grades with the Under 13 team making the finals. All other teams had good performances as well, which they can all be proud of. I must thank all our junior coaches who again gave their time and knowledge to support our junior players and make this season successful and fun. We have amazing coaches and a special thank you goes out to the new coaches this year, who put their hand up and volunteered to take on a role where they had no idea what it would bring. After speaking to them at the end of the season they have really enjoyed the experience and have indicated their return for next season. The parent support this year has been great and we appreciate the support you have given the club, your children and our coaches.
A big thank you must go to our Junior sponsors – Pam Mitchell, Harcourts and Darryl McLachlan, I Pave Concrete & Asphalt. Being able to provide every junior with a club jacket and also prizes for the end of the season was fantastic and we really appreciate the support you have provided for the juniors this season.
I have to thank our new Junior Committee, Terry Naylor, Chrissy Roberts, Sarah Jack, Hayley & Janelle McLachlan & Suellen Robb, without you all, we would not have achieved what we did this year and I believe this has been a great step forward for the future of the Junior section at our club.
I would also like to thank the Board of Directors for their support. Whose willingness to take on our ideas and show their faith in a new committee and to be able to move forward for the future of the junior club has been outstanding.
Next year promises to be bigger and better, we hope to see you all back at the Shirley Rugby Club to play another season, please also bring your friends along to a great club. I want to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and look forward to seeing you all again next season.
Debbie Curtain - Junior Club Captain
